Read Write Inc.

Phonics forms the basis of learning to read and write therefore, it is of great importance within the early years. Here at Whitstone we follow the government approved, Read Write Inc. scheme. This involves children within the Foundation Stage learning single letter sounds, focusing heavily on clear pronunciation and letter formation. As the year progresses, children will begin to 'blend' these single letter sounds into words; 'r-e-d' or 'p-e-n'. The scheme continues throughout KS1 as children build up their knowledge of sounds, red words and fluency when reading. 

As the Autumn term progresses, we will begin to send home appropriate books and resources to enable you to support your children with both their reading and writing at home. There is strong research proving that children who are given the opportunity to read at home can make up to six months worth of additional progress within their reading ability.
