During our Magnificent Monarchs project, we will learn about English and British monarchs from AD 871 to the present day and consider how the power of the monarchy has changed over time. We will study six significant sovereigns; Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and the current monarch, Elizabeth II. Once we have looked at all six sovereigns in detail, we will then choose which of the sovereigns that we have studied is the most significant of all!
In English we will be reading about the story of the previously most longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria and her famous bathing machine. Poor Queen Victoria! She loves to swim, but can't quite figure out how to get to the water without her devoted subjects glimpsing her swimming suit. (Because, of course, such a sight would compromise her royal dignity.) Fortunately for the water-loving monarch, it's Prince Albert to the rescue with an invention fit for a queen!
The bathing machine was a device, popular from the 18th century until the early 20th century, to allow people to change out of their usual clothes, change into swimwear, and wade into the ocean, without being seen in their swimsuits. During this term we will be looking at how the machine was created and see if we can have a go at designing one of our own during beach tribe to get our own royal king or queen to the sea without being spotted!
